Fifth Annual Strides for Health Sets New Record

Two Hundred and fifty individuals participated in the 5th Annual Strides for Health 5K held at Ascension Borgess Allegan Hospital on Saturday, August 20, 2011. Events included a 5K run and walk, one-mile kids’ fun run and free health screenings. Participants ranged in age from as young as two in the kids’ fun run, up to 71 in the 5K.

The overall male winner was Kenneth Brooks of Portage, who was the first person to cross the finish line at 16:51. The second overall male winner was Jeff Layne of Wayland (17:58). In third place was Matthew Smith of Wyoming (18:10).

Jessica Shaw of Allegan was the overall female winner. Her time was 20:04. Sarah Hondorp of Zeeland came in second place (20:46) and Crystal Kelm of Allegan finished third (22:20).

Ruth Pratt of Zeeland was the overall female masters’ winner and Patrik Hultberg was the overall male masters’ winner.

Strides for Health 5K Run/Walk was a put on by the Ascension Borgess Allegan Foundation, Allegan Tigershark Aquatic Club, and Allegan Public Schools’ Swimming and Diving Program in an effort to maintain and improve the health of the community. For more information, please visit or
